I have spoken in hundreds of schools and libraries to thousands of young people. My readings revolve around a slide presentation and talk. Using wonderful historical slides pertaining to each of my novels, I weave my stories around the historical events of the Second World War and the Holocaust. These presentations are appropriate for students in grades 4 through 8. The presentation is interactive, visual, and informative. Each presentation is approximately one hour.
Writing the Stories you Love to Read:
I do workshops on the writing process with smaller groups of students. Children will learn the elements of good story writing, and will begin to create their own stories.
Teaching Sensitive Material to Young Readers: The Holocaust and Children’s Literature:
I have developed a series of workshops for teachers and educators that focus on teaching sensitive material to young people. Using principals that assist in teaching sensitive topics, and an extensive reading list, I am able to make this difficult material accessible and relevant for children.
Continuing Education – Writing for Children:
For the past five years I have taught a course in Writing for Children at the University of Toronto – School of Continuing Studies. This ten week course covers all the elements of good story writing. The first hour of each class is lecture format. In the second hour students are expected to bring their own writing in for group critique.
